Measuring the ROI of Your Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence Efforts – Part 6 – Transparency into the Information Compilation Process

Transparency is the visibility of classifications, business rules, definitions and calculations of for everybody in the enterprise to see.

The value of transparency is that it is easy to get not just at the desired result but being able to reproduce it. It is not unusual, especially when it comes to regulatory reports that the information being reported needs to be cross checked and double checked.

Transparency is also the building of trust in the information and the people producing the information. If there is no trust then departments go back to duplicating the processes for producing the same results.

Transparency allows you to uncover and correct problems before they snowball into something bigger. It is also an important step towards better collaboration within the enterprise.

Asking for transparency can be the bane of some departments who are reluctant to share information. I would be interested to hear some war stories for folks out on projects trying to address transparency.
