Measuring the ROI of Your Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence Efforts – Part 4 – Accuracy of Information

The Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence combination improves the accuracy of information reported.

This may sound simple enough but in even a small organization the same information could be stored in multiple systems and I use that term “system” loosely. The “system” could be a vendor or home grown application in the best case, a spreadsheet and in the worst case a comment on a Post-It note.

The same information could be called something different in different departments. Things get really interesting when different departments give the same label to different data elements. These issues will need to be addressed by your organization’s metadata repository and data governance policies and procedures.

Another factor to consider is that the information may available but not ready for consumption until it has been “finalized” by the owners of the data. Consuming the data earlier will lead to inaccurate results.

Addressing these issues at a cross-departmental and enterprise level significantly improves the quality of the data and your ability to make decisions.

Accuracy is tough issue in Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence projects and I would be interested to learn how people have dealt with such issues in their projects.
