One of the benefits for a Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence combination is the reduced cost for the enterprise to get to the answers.
In the scenario where there is no Data Warehouse, this could mean having an army of people working with spreadsheets trying to put together the numbers needed for various business needs. The people involved pulling all this information together are typically highly paid individuals with undergraduate degrees, MBA’s & PhD’s.
This is in comparison to when there is some semblance of a data warehouse where you have involvement from business users but it is significantly less: they provide requirements and priorities but beyond that they spend their time analyzing the data rather than collecting and collating the data.
There is greater involvement by the IT department, but net net the number of people involved in collecting and collating is significantly less, with the bulk of the effort picked up by computers.
What do you think would be some other cost reductions from a Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence effort? I have my thoughts, I’d like to hear yours. Or if you think there would be none or it is just a huge drain on enterprise resources that would also be an interesting discussion to have.
